The unique, multi-facted dialogue that has existed from antiquity between the Jews of Italy and their surrounding culture. Historical documents, literature, music, the plastic arts, illuminated manuscripts, etc. provide the material through which two basic themes were explored: 1. the relationship between the Jews and their Italian compatriots and 2. the circumstances which enabled Italy’s Jews to become similar to their Christian countrymen while retaining their Jewishness in all of its aspects. 24 historical and art historical essays, with individual treatment of such topics as: the symbolic use of the columns from Solomon’s Temple, Hebrew illuminated manuscripts and printed books from the Renaissance, Baroque Jewish painting, collections of Hebrew illuminated manuscripts in Italy, the art of the Roman ghetto, Jewish portraiture in medals, etc. No itemized listing. |
