Description |
Photographs of Jewish sites taken during An-sky’s ethnographic exhibitions, 1912–1914. An-sky intended to assemble these and many other images into a luxurious artistic photo album, which would “form the foundation of Jewish ethnographic scholarship, the mission of which was to play a major role for the flowering of Jewish culture, literature, and art”. The album was never published. Volume 1: Introductory essay and photographs of stone synagogues. Volume 2: photographs of wooden synagogues, ordinary streets, and cemeteries and tombstones. Includes DVD with all photographs. 92 items. |

This was the fourth in a series of exhibitions that endeavored to show, through archival photographs from the Museum of Petersburg Jewish Historical-Ethnographic Society (kept in the archives of the “Petersburg Judaica” Center), the world of the shtetl on the eve of its destruction.
