Description |
The relationship between Amsterdam’s Jewish community, its Christian population, and Rembrandt’s work. Particular importance is seen in the influx of Jewish refugees from the Iberian Peninsula and Central Europe at the end of the 16th C, at the very time that Holland’s Christians were undergoing an intense period of “Hebraic identification”. Both of these occurrences only slightly preceded the year of Rembrandt’s birth. 7 essays on: the Portuguese Jews (Yosef Kaplan), the influence of Flavius Josephus’ Antiquities of the Jews on Dutch 16th–17th-C painting (Christian Tümpel), Hebrew writing in Rembrandt’s work (Mirjam Alexander-Knotter), a sketch presumably of Menasseh ben Israel (Henry Méchoulan), controversies around the work of Rembrandt (Albert Blankert), and Rembrandt in the collection of Baron Edmound de Rothschild. Majority of catalog dedicated to the exhibits. Extensive entries. 186 items. |
