Description

The role of the poppy plant and its opium derivative throughout the ages. With sections on use of the poppy in Eretz Israel and its environs: during the biblical period, during the period of the Mishnah and Talmud, amongst oriental Jews (for medicinal purposes), etc. Exhibits included an ancient chancel screen from a synagogue or church in Eretz Israel (p. 61), and a Hanukkah lamp from Afghanistan which was kindled by poppy seed oil (p. 33).
