Description

Yudovin’s photographs of Eastern European Jewish children. The images were taken on Yudovin’s first ethnographic expedition with An-sky (1912), who used them to promote his vision of a “Jewish nursery”—an institution that would bring the best of shtetl child-rearing to the Jewish intelligentsia. Ceremonial objects and Torah ornaments featured in two photographs: one of synagogue silver (no. 21), the other from an exhibition of ritual objects collected by An-sky during his expeditions (no. 22). Photographs with brief captions. 27 items.

Description

This was the third in a series of exhibitions that endeavored to show, through archival photographs from the Museum of Petersburg Jewish Historical-Ethnographic Society (kept in the archives of the “Petersburg Judaica” Center), the world of the shtetl on the eve of its destruction. For the other 3 exhibitions in this series, see: #1850, #1851, and #1913.
