Description |
The origins and representation of the zodiac signs in pagan, Christian and Jewish traditions, with particular emphasis on its appearance in Jewish art. Two essays by Iris Fishof examine the various contexts in which the zodiac appears in Jewish art (synagogue mosaic floors, calendars, synagogue ceilings, Torah ornaments, astronomical and medical texts, etc.), and how each zodaic sign is represented artistically. Two additional essays discuss: “The Celestial Host, the Calendar and Jewish Art” (Ariel Cohen), and “The Zodiac in Jewish Thought” (Moshe Idel). |
