Description

A fictional yet historically-possible gathering of 50 of Vienna’s Jewish cultural and intellectual elite in the home of Viennese dramatist and poet Richard Beer-Hoffmann. Each guest bears a “gift” that relates to a contemporary topic and thus contributes to our understanding of Vienna’s milieu at the turn of the century and the inner world of Beer-Hofmann. Catalog in two main sections: “The World of Richard Beer-Hofmann” (featuring portraits and objects related to Beer-Hofmann and his family) and “Beer-Hoffman’s Guests and their Gifts” (with full-page entries on each individual and their contribution). Essay on Jewish bourgeoisie in turn-of-the-century Vienna (Karen Roth-Krauthammer) and conceptual remarks on the exhibition (Felicitas Heimann-Jelinek). Extensive descriptive entries. No itemized listing. 84 items.
