Description

A traveling exhibition of Jewish ethnographic and artistic objects, most of which were collected by An-Sky during his expeditions in Eastern Europe. Three essays on: An-sky’s expedition (from the memoirs of Abraham Rechtman, who participated in the expedition), “The Jewish Holdings in the Leningrad Ethnographic Museum” (Igor Krupnik), and a detailed overview of the “Ashkenazi Jewish Collections of the State Ethnographic Museum in St. Petersburg” (Ludmila Uritskaya). Catalog listing interspersed with lengthy extracts from Rechtman’s memoirs on: the synagogues of Mezeritch, Olik, Berdichev, Nemirov, Brahilov, Dobne; the interiors of old synagogues, pinkassim, amulets, and Rabbi Baruch’l of Medzhibozh. Unnumbered descriptive entries, some in detail. 318 items.
