The life and times of this Marrano philosopher, physician and apologist, who rose to prominence in Spain, was denounced to the Inquisition and subjected to imprisonment and torture for three years, and forced to leave Spain. Orobio de Castro and his family settled first in Toulouse, and then in Amsterdam, where he declared his Jewish identity and became a distinguished member of the Spanish-Portuguese community.
