The first major exhibition on the subject of Tzedaka. Monumental catalog includes numerous examples of tzedakah boxes, and a variety of Judaica objects and paintings illustrated with scenes of tzedaka-giving and gemilut-chasadim (many related to the Hevra Kaddisha and Purim). 15 essays, including: “Armut und Wohltätigkeit in der Kunst der Aschkenasim” [Poverty and Charity in the Art of Ashkenazim] (Anne Alter). Exhibition in five sections, the first two (the religious basis for tzedaka, and the practice of tzedaka) featuring objects and artworks. The final three sections concentrate on the history of tzedaka and charity organizations amongst German Jews in the 20th C. Brief descriptive entries. 419 items. |
