The collective experience of Eastern European Jewish immigrants who settled in Worcester, Massachusetts between 1880 and 1945, and the centrality of Water Street to their new lives. Three main essays address the immigrants’ transition to America, their professions, and their culture. Appendix by Nancy Sadick presents statistics from the 1910 Federal Consensus. Separate map of Water Street details the tenement buildings of that time, and the names and professions of their known Jewish residents. Exhibition checklist in 6 sections, following the divisions and general layout of the exhibition. Numerous photographs and documents, including images of synagogues and cemeteries, and a few ceremonial objects (cat. nos. 56–58, 117–125). Short descriptive entries. 313 items. |
