Description |
Judeo-Christian religious architecture—its origins, components, forms, representations, and associations. The survey begins with the “innovative” structures of the ancient period and the Renaissance (including the Temple in Jerusalem), and continues with the “nostalgic” buildings and images of the 17th–20th C. Chapter 3 includes synagogues, Torah ornaments and related prints (pp. 144–149, cat. nos. 146–157). Chapter 4 discusses “Nouvelles spéculations sur le Temple Jérusalem” [New Speculations on the Temple in Jerusalem] in the 17th Century (pp. 150–153, cat. nos. 158–162). Chagall’s painting of the Vilna synagogue is the last item featured. Extensive descriptive entries. 285 items. |
