Stift Melk (29 March–2 November 1980)

A monumental historical survey of this period, with numerous and varied essays. The Jewish community is discussed in “Das österreichische Judentum im Zeitalter der josephinischen Toleranz” [Austrian Jewry in the Age of Josephine Tolerance] (Wolfgang Häusler, pp. 166–169). Related exhibits listed on pp. 524–532 (cat. nos. 943–979). Detailed entries. 1790 items (37 Jewish).

This was one of two colossal Austrian exhibitions dedicated to Joseph II and Maria Theresa in 1980 (the 200th anniversary of Maria Theresa’s death). The other major exhibition, “Maria Theresia und ihre Zeit”, was shown at Schönbrunn Palace, Vienna. Numerous smaller, thematically-related exhibitions were held in the same year (as, for example, #637).
