Description |
A monumental, international exhibition dedicated to the topic of public health and hygiene, from pre-antiquity to modern times. Catalog in five chronological sections each with numerous sub-sections. Exhibits included original objects, models, manuscripts, drawings, prints and photographs. Jewish material presented in three of the sections: Pre-Antiquity (A.III “Juden” [Jews], pp. 29–32, cat. nos. 901–1047, including the Torah and its ornaments, tombstones and catacombs); Middle Ages (C.XXIX “Juden (Sabbatstube)” [Jews—Shabbat Room], pp. 222–228, cat. nos. 7151–7362, with ceremonial objects, schechita items, amulets, circumcision implements, mohel books from Hamburg-Altona, and items related to burial, hevra kadisha, health care, ghettos, and mikva’ot (including a model of a mikvah, and tombstones from Aden, Israel and Vienna); C. XXX, including antisemitic “Kornjuden” medals, pp. 240–241, cat. nos. 47–65); and Modern Period (D.XLVI, with numerous Jewish amulets featured on pp. 387–389, cat. nos. 13559, 13565–13575, 13596–13621).
