Description

Bergen-Belsen Displaced Persons Camp (20–30 July 1947)

Description

An historical, mostly-photographic exhibition on the Jewish communities of various German towns (including Göttingen, Mohrung, Bodenfelde, Neustadt in Holstein, etc.) prepared as part of a larger endeavor to document Jewish communities destroyed in the Holocaust. This monumental post-war effort was carried out by local “Historical Commissions” that were set up in German and Bavarian Displaced Persons camps, and were run by Holocaust survivors. Their primary purpose was to write and collect historical material that both recorded Jewish life before the Holocaust, and testified to the atrocities committed by the Nazis. This particular exhibition was organized by the Historical Commission of the Central Committee of Liberated Jews in the British Zone, and included contributions from the Jewish Historical Commission for Lower Saxony, Göttingen. It was held for 10 days in the Bergen-Belsen Displaced persons camp, two years after this concentration camp had been liberated. Ceremonial objects appeared in photographs only. No itemized listing.

Description

Available on-line: http://digifindingaids.cjh.org/?pID=2262096.
