- 1 IntroductionKarel Černý is a sociologist working at the Faculty of Humanities at Charles University in Prague. He deals with the issue of Czech and European Muslims, in a comparative perspective. Thanks to a Fulbright Scholarship, he has also researched Islam in the USA. In addition, he looks at Middle Eastern refugees, using the example of Iraqi Yazidis, and the issue of the structural causes of instability in the Middle East, on which he published the monograph Instability in the Middle East: Structural Changes and Uneven Modernisation 1950–2015 (Prague: Charles University Press, 2017).
