ABSTRACTAccording to Albert Hindmarsh, the best method to explain Japan's foreign policy in a simple, a realistic, and an accurate way, and to understand the attitude of Japanese diplomacy in Japan with regard to China and the Western powers, is to highlight the close relations between the internal situation and the external action of the country. The author examines the formation of modern Japan, the problem of population, the solutions to the problem of overcrowding, the issues of industrialization and expansion of trade, and the international implications of these elements.

Selon Albert Hindmarsh, la meilleure méthode pour, d'une part, expliquer d'une façon à la fois simple, réaliste et exacte la politique étrangère du Japon, et, d'autre part, pour comprendre l'attitude de la diplomatie nippone à l'égard de la Chine et des puissances occidentales, est de mettre tout d'abord en lumière les relations étroites existant entre la situation intérieure et l'action extérieure de ce pays. L'auteur étudie ainsi la formation du Japon moderne, le problème de la population, les solutions proposées au problème posé au surpeuplement, les questions de l'industrialisation et de l'expansion du commerce, et les répercussions internationales de ces éléments.
