Several branches of the Indo-EuropeanIndo-European language family, viz. Greek, Indo-Iranian, Armenian and Phrygian, use a prefix *(h1)é-, called ‘augment’ in Greco-Latin grammatical tradition, on past indicative verb forms, beside forms without the augment, called ‘injunctive’ forms. In Greek, only vestiges of this verb form are attested, variously explained by different scholars, as is the origin of the injunctive as a whole.
