Abstract Palestinian theater as a whole, and gender issues in particular, remain under-researched by both Arab and Western academics, despite the increasingly prevalent role of theater within Palestinian society in the Occupied Territories of the West Bank and Gaza Strip. This entry seeks to explore the increasing role of female Palestinian theater practitioners in this cultural field, which serves not only as civil resistance against the Israeli Occupation, but also as part of the cultural rejuvenation of Palestine since its reunification following the 1967 war. The role of Palestinian women in theater is analyzed through the historic development and professionalization of Palestinian theater during the twentieth century. This involves an examination of how the female figure is presented upon the stage, and how this has changed over time, particularly in relation to the different stages of resistance, including armed struggle and more dialogic practices. By critically assessing Palestinian theater through the prism of gendered theater practices in Palestine in key productions both historical and recent, key findings regarding the imagined and actual position of women in a traditional patriarchal society can be drawn and scrutinized. Theentry argues that Palestinian theater continues to be a vitally important part of the non-violent struggle against the Israeli occupation, and that positive internal social changes regarding the status of women can be observed through the multitude of theater practices existing today in the Occupied Palestinian Territories.
