After a brief historical introduction, this entry provides an overview of language contact phenomena in the Circum-Baltic linguistic area with the focus on pattern borrowings and pattern adaptations. It furthermore discusses general conceptual and methodological concerns of areal linguistics, which, it argues, should be viewed as a discipline in its own rights.
