The language of SMS (from En short message service) messages is characterized by numerous specificities distinguishing it from other forms of written and oral communication and on the basis of which it can be considered a special register or genre. Among these specific features, the shortening of words and expressions in order to save letter spaces, time, the number of keystrokes, or money are particularly noteworthy. In this entry, the most significant features of SMS communication in Slavic languages are presented, with a special focus on emoticons and ideographs, as nonalphabetic signs that enable the transmission of contextual (pragmatic) information, as well as innovation and creativity.
