The sign languages of the deaf communities in Slavic countries are complete human languages. They are understudied and often marginalized, although they are scientifically and legally recognized as independent from the surrounding spoken languages. Due to influences of modality, youth, atypical community, and acquisition, they appear to be similar to all sign languages studied to date. On the basis of some historical evidence, they are often associated with the Old French Sign Language, although this phylogenetics has not been thoroughly investigated in comparative studies, which does not warrant treating them as a single language family.
