Tense establishes a time relation between a verbal situation and a reference time. This assumption forms the basis for describing the forms and functions of Slavic tenses in the present entry. Furthermore, the entry characterizes their combination in taxis constructions and in combinations with aspect, voice, and modal categories. Finally, the entry offers a sketch of the Slavic North–South continuum and its prehistory.
