Most of the world’s natural languages developed formal means of expressing the conceptual distinction between “one” and “more than one” with grammatical number being one of the most significant such means. This entry discusses the basic morphosyntactic and semantic properties of Slavic number systems. It focuses on properties of the grammatical category of number and explores its expression across Slavic, including the singular and the plural as well as the dual. Furthermore, it investigates issues related to markedness and the meaning of grammatical number in various linguistic environments. Finally, collectives and singulatives as well as so-called count forms in quantifier phrases are discussed.
