The article sketches the external history of the Prague Linguistic Circle. It presents the sources of inspiration of the circle, basic data on the innovative functional-structural approach of the circle to linguistics (and literary studies), and key ideas enshrined in the “Theses of the Circle.” It provides biographies of its main personalities and describes the lectures and activities of the circle in its two main phases: (a) the classical period (1926–1945), divided into two parts: (1) from the establishment of the circle (1926) to the beginning of the Protectorate of Bohemia and Moravia (March 1939) and (2) during the protectorate; (b) in the postwar period until the informal termination of the circle (1952). Finally, the renewal of the circle in 1990 is also discussed.
