An Arabic theological and literary term for the matchless nature of the qurʾānic discourse (Ar. iʿjāz al-Qurʾān). Although “inimitability” (iʿjāz) is not attested in the Qurʾān, it has a qurʾānic cognate, the fourth form verb aʿjazaaʿjaza ii, 526b hu, “he found him to be without strength, or power, or ability; it frustrated his power or ability” (cf. Lane); aʿjaza and various derived forms occur sixteen times in the Qurʾān.
