Alija (Pl. Alijot, hebr.) hat die Grundbedeutung von »Aufstieg«. Der Begriff bezeichnete schon in biblischen Zeiten die Wanderung in das Land Israel, auf seine erhöhte Lage anspielend. Bibelkommentatoren verliehen dem Terminus eine spirituelle Bedeutung, indem sie den Vorgang des Aufsteigens in die Ankunft im Heiligen Land umdeuteten. Die zionistische Bewegung griff die sakrale Konnotation auf, transformierte sie in eine säkulare politische Idee und machte die Alija zu einem zentralen Bestandteil des nationalen Selbstverständnisses.
