Domestic politics was dominated by preparations for the decisive 2010 presidential elections and by the escalation of a feud within the ruling Gnassingbé clan, which culminated in April in an alleged plot to stage a coup, led by Kpatcha Gnassingbé, the younger half-brother of the head of state. It was claimed that the alleged plot also involved other members of the family, who were still in detention without official arraignment at the end of the year. The international donor community rewarded political reforms. Economic growth was negatively affected by the global economic and financial crisis.
