The repercussions from the alleged mercenary plot uncovered in March of last year and the succession issue were at the centre of the political stage. President Obiang's ten-day visit to major Asian countries in October marked a shift in foreign policy priorities, which used to be dominated by trading partners and investors from the US and Europe. The economy seemed to be set for much more moderate development in the near future. New oil and gas discoveries will take several years to come on stream. Although the oil-rich country did not depend on IMF lending, a rapprochement with the IMF and the World Bank appeared possible.
