The year was relatively good, characterised by stable political circumstances and ecological conditions. As has been the case since 2002, Mali's political machinery ran on consensus rather than opposition. Throughout the year, in the press as well as in official pronouncements, some pride in the consensus model shone through, and it was seen as a model other countries in the world should emulate. Of course, other voices were heard as well, as some political commentators decried the absence of real opposition and of a culture of debate. One of the common complaints by journalists in particular was that people were considered to be either sycophants or traitors to their country. The main political parties were represented by one or two ministers in the cabinet. President Touré was still the undisputed leader and able to keep political parties united.
