Encyclopedia of Medicine in the Greco-Roman World Online

The Encyclopedia of Medicine in the Greco-Roman World offers a translation and a significantly revised, updated, and expanded edition of the acclaimed reference work Antike Medizin: Ein Lexikon (2005), edited by Karl-Heinz Leven and published by Verlag C.H. Beck. The encyclopedia is published as a fully searchable online resource which also contains the complete German-language original. In this way, the German-language work is made available to a much wider international readership, while simultaneously being expanded with hundreds of new articles by renowned experts in the field. These new additions provide coverage of more recent research, as well as filling in gaps in the original edition. The Encyclopedia of Medicine in the Greco-Roman World is an indispensable resource for scholars and students of medical history, classics, and archaeology. Similarly, scholars working in neighboring disciplines, such as Arabic and Byzantine studies, will benefit from this reference work. Online publication of the work has commenced in November 2024. New material will be published in regular updates until the project’s completion, planned for late 2025. A print volume of the entire volume is planned for publication at the end of 2025.
A brochure with the planned Table of Contents is available here.
